Choosing a Wedding Venue with Photography in Mind
Every wedding venue will have some features you can exploit for great photo opportunities. Some will be obvious and some not so much. Your photographer will usually be accustomed to picking the right places for the best shots. However, it never hurts to be prepared and the more research you do when choosing your wedding venue the more great photos you will get. Once you've chosen your photographer let them know which locations you think will work well at your wedding venue. That way your photographer knows what you have in mind.
Question your venue coordinator
When choosing your venue ask your coordinator plenty of questions and pay particular attention to details. For example:
- Ask where do the Bride & Groom usually have their photos taken.
- Ask to see any photographs that have been taken there previously. (Several venues will keep an album of photographs of past weddings to show their venue at its best).
- Take a slow walk around the inside and outside of the venue looking for photo opportunities.
- Make a note of any pictures/locations you see and like.
What to look for inside
Most people concentrate on what is outside a wedding venue, but it's always good to have options for photos inside too. Indoor photography adds balance to your photographs, providing varied scenery. Then, even if it rains you still won't be short of good photographic opportunities.
Look for ornate features - fireplaces, mirrors, decorated staircases, stylish furniture and other features that capture your imagination.
A large, well lit room is also an advantage. If you have this as an option, then should the weather be bad you can always use this room for any family groups you require.

Staircases can give unlimited opportunities. This picture shows how they can be used to create beautiful bridal portraiture.
However, stairs can also be used for great romantic couple shots and group shots with a difference.

Furniture such as this piano can also provide lovely shots that give a variety and uniqueness to your photographs.

What to look for outside
Look for any external features that can be utilised to good effect - external stairs, fountains, twisted trees, the building itself, bridges, arches, water features, columns etc.
Here are a few examples of how these features can make your photographs into wow shots:
Just taking a little time out before your wedding day to do some of the suggestions mentioned above can make the difference between photographs that you like and photographs that you love! It can be difficult to find the time to address some of the finer details of your day but if you do, you're sure to have a fantastic day that you'll remember forever.
